Welcome to the GCLS Arcade

Welcome to the GCLS Arcade! Below you’ll find links to small games we’ve made featuring the GCLS library, as well as information on the GCLS Community Arcade, a full stand-up cabinet that resides in the teen room at the Mullica Hill library.

The GCLS Community Arcade is a full-sized arcade cabinet filled with classic games of all kinds, no quarters required! It’s powered by an Android TV device running EmuElec. The cabinet supports two players, with four buttons for each player. The arcade cabinet was installed in the Mullica Hill branch teen room in March of 2024. Next time you’re in the Mullica Hill library, stop over at the arcade for a quick game!

Library Card Hunt is a short top-down RPG game designed by digital services librarian Paul Palmer in June 2022 for GCLS. Players take on the role of new volunteer for the library that must search for 5 patron’s missing library cards. As you search, you can explore the library, speak with staff and learn about various services the library provides. The map is modeled after the Mullica Hill branch of GCLS, so you can wander the stacks at in the children’s department, wander out to the calming atrium, visit the reference desk, or check out the MakerStudio! The game only takes a few minutes to complete and encourages players to explore the library at their leisure. The game was designed in RPG Maker MV.

Library Card Signup is a new game being developed by digital services librarian Paul Palmer for GCLS. Inspired by the arcade game Tapper from the 1980s, you play as a librarian signing up new patrons for library cards during a busy Library Card Signup Month. There are five horizontal lanes patrons will travel down towards the front desk, where the player is. You jump between the different lanes sending out new cards to patrons, who will then walk away happily. If a patron gets all the way to the desk and haven’t been given a card, you lose a life. You have three lives to deliver as many cards as you can. Every so often a golden library card may appear. Collect it and your cards will be temporarily powered up, allowing you to sign up multiple people with one card! You can only have three cards on the screen at a time, so don’t spam the key!

This game was developed in the free and open source game engine GDevelop.
